How To Make A Pillow Form
In my last blog post, I discussed how to make your own envelope pillow covers. In this one, I am showing you how to make your own pillow forms. You didn’t think I would leave you hanging, did you?
Let’s get started on how to do this!
Let’s Make It!
Supplies Needed:
Pillow Casing (what you will be putting the pillow form/insert in)
Lightweight Fabric ( I use a poly-cotton blend, but you can use cotton, polyester, whatever you have.)
Matching Thread
Clips or Pins
Iron & Pressing Surface
Scrap Paper/Pen for Figuring Out The Math
Measuring Tape
Ruler
Rotary Cutter/Mat or Scissors
Sewing Machine
The math is super easy for this one! Here’s the formula:
Width Measurement + 1” = Width of fabric to cut
Length Measurement + 1” = Length of fabric to cut
Cut TWO panels that measure this size.
Step 1: Sew Pillow Shell
Clip or pin the layers together, right sides together, really well, making sure the layers don’t shift. Mark an opening that is big enough to comfortably get your hand inside (4” - 5”). Sew around all the edges using a 1/2” seam allowance and not sewing over the opening. Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end.
Press well. Next, while the pillow shell is still inside out, fold the seam allowance down at the opening and press well. Repeat this on the other side of the opening.
After the opening is pressed down, clip all four corners of the pillow form shell, making sure not to cut into the stitching.
Turn pillow form shell through the opening. Poke out the corners and press well.
Step 2: Stuff Pillow
Once the pillow shell is turned and pressed well, stuff the pillow shell with your favorite stuffing. I love using inexpensive pillows from Walmart for this, but you can use Polyfil, if you would like.
Start stuff in the corners. Add as much stuffing as you would like.
Step 3: Close Opening
Now it is time to close the opening. You can do this by hand or by machine.
Congratulations! Your pillow form is finished! Yay!
Please let me know if you have any questions! As always, I am happy to help!
Happy Quilting!
