Mini Quilted Heart Wallhanging
Welcome to the world of heartfelt crafting, where we embark on a journey to create a symbol of love and warmth – a mini quilted heart! Whether you're a seasoned quilter or a beginner looking for a charming project, this tutorial is perfect for you. In just a few simple steps, you'll be able to create a delightful mini quilted heart that radiates love and creativity.
Here’s the Supply List:
Step 1: Selecting Fabric Scraps:
Select a variety of red and pink fabric scraps in different patterns, adding the the scrappy feel of this heart. This is a great opportunity to use up those scrap fabrics from previous projects. The more variety, the merrier! Ensure that your fabrics complement each other well.
Step 2: Making Half Square Triangles
The quilted heart is made up of 2.5” finished blocks that includes (8) half-square triangles (HSTs). There are many different ways to make HSTs and anyone you ask has their favorite. There are also a lot of tools out there to help you make them.
When I make these, I like to make the HSTs oversize some and then trim them down. I find there is less shifting if I do it this way.
Here are the steps I use:
Place a 2.75” print square and a 2.75” background square, pretty sides facing each other.
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of the background square.
Sew on the drawn line.
Cut 1/4” from the drawn line
Press to the dark fabric
Repeat with the remaining seven sets
Trim the HSTs up to 2.5” using your preferred method
Step 3: Laying Out The Heart
Lay out the block. Once it is the way you like it, press three HSTs in the opposite direction (see photo). This will allow the HSTs to nest together when you sew them, making your life much easier. :)
Step 4: Sewing It Together
One pressed, sew the rows together. Press each seam either open or to one side. If pressing to the side, make sure each row is pressed in opposite directions so the
Step 5: Adding Borders
Sew the shorter border pieces to the top and bottom of the heart block. Press towards the border.
Sew the longer border pieces to the right and left sides of the block. Press towards the border pieces.
Step 6: Sandwiching & Quilting
Next, lay the backing piece of fabric down with the right side (pretty side) facing down.
Layer the batting next, centering it on the background of the fabric.
Finally add the mini heart quilt block, centering it on top of the batting with the block facing up
Quilt as desired.
Step 7: Binding & Finishing
Option 1: Bind Quilt As Desired
Option 2 (As Highlighted in the Video): Self-Binding Method:
Trim the batting so it is about 1/8” from the edges of the quilt
Trim the backing so it is 3/4” from the quilt.
Working one side at a time, fold edges of the backing in so it is even with the edge of the batting. Press.
