Stitch & Flip Quilting
If you have been following the quilting trends lately, we are seeing a resurgence of what is called Stitch & Flip Quilting. Although this isn’t a new technique by any means, it sure is a fun one! Here is some information about it:
What is it? In quilting, this technique is where a maker places a fabric on top of a base or foundation, usually batting, muslin, scrap cotton fabric, or even paper, and then adding another piece of fabric, right sides together, and stitching on top of all three layers (foundation, bottom fabric, and top fabric). After you stitch the pieces down, you flip it over. Here is a video using this technique: Stitch & Flip Quilt Block . Word of caution—I don’t press anything in this project. Usually you do, but I didn’t feel like it and it turned out beautifully. Who knew?
How is it different from Quilt As You Go (QAYG)? When the stitch & flip method is used with batting as a foundation, it is often called Quilt As You Go, because this method actually quilts the project as you sew the pieces down. To see examples of this, I have a few videos: Revisable Table Runner, Simple Zipper Pouch, and Crazy Quilt Christmas Stocking.
I hope this help break down some of the mystery behind the Stitch & Flip technique! It is a fun way to just let go and enjoy the piecing process. I hope you give it a try!
